Saint Albert of Jerusalem, also known as Albert Avogadro, was a 12th- and 13th-century Italian bishop, Carmelite legislator, and martyr who served as Patriarch of Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades. Born into a noble family in northern Italy, he became a canon regular and later bishop before being appointed Patriarch in 1205. In that role he provided wise leadership to the Latin Church in the Holy Land and, most notably, gave the first formal Rule to the hermits living on Mount Carmel, thereby laying the foundational legislation for the Carmelite Order.
Saint Albert was assassinated on September 14, 1214, while celebrating the Divine Liturgy in Acre. Venerated in the Roman Rite and especially by the Carmelites, his feast day is celebrated on September 25. He is honored as a model of episcopal wisdom, peacemaking, and service to the contemplative life, reminding the faithful that true authority is exercised through humble obedience to God’s will and care for His people.
