Saint Alberic of Utrecht (died August 21, 784 AD) was a Frankish churchman who served as Bishop of Utrecht and continued the evangelization of the Frisian and Saxon peoples in the lower Rhine region of what is now the Netherlands and northwestern Germany. He was the son of Saint Gregory of Utrecht, who had been the principal collaborator of Saint Boniface in the Frankish mission, and thus was born into the very heart of the eighth-century mission to the Germanic peoples. He governed the see of Utrecht after his father and continued to extend the Christian faith in the Frisian territories. His feast day is celebrated on August 21.

Alberic of Utrecht belongs to the generation of ecclesiastics who consolidated the gains of the great Bonifatian mission to the Germanic peoples. His father Gregory had been formed by Boniface himself and had governed the church at Utrecht for over thirty years; Alberic inherited both the see and the mission, maintaining the Carolingian Church's program of Christian expansion along the North Sea coast and the rivers of the lower Rhine.

Biography

Birth

Alberic was born as the son of Saint Gregory of Utrecht (Gregorius of Utrecht), who was one of the most important ecclesiastics of the eighth-century Frankish Church. Gregory had been a student at the court school of Charles Martel and had come under the influence of Saint Boniface, the Anglo-Saxon missionary to the Germans, who made Gregory abbot of Saint Martin's at Utrecht and entrusted him with the oversight of the Frisian mission. Growing up in this environment, Alberic was immersed from birth in the world of the Carolingian Church and the Frisian mission.

Early Life

Alberic received his formation within the ecclesiastical world of Utrecht, the principal center of the Church in the lower Rhine region. His father Gregory governed the see of Utrecht from around 741 until his death in 775—a tenure of over three decades during which the Frisian Church was consolidated and extended. Alberic served in the church at Utrecht during his father's long governance, receiving both academic formation and practical experience in the administration of a missionary diocese.

Occupation

After the death of his father Gregory in 775, Alberic succeeded him as the head of the church at Utrecht. He governed the see until his death in 784, continuing the pastoral and missionary program that Gregory had established. The see of Utrecht in the late eighth century was still a frontier church in many respects, with significant pagan populations to the north and east that were being incorporated into the Carolingian Christian order through a combination of Frankish political power and ecclesiastical mission.

Alberic maintained the connections with the great reforming figures of the Carolingian Church that his father had cultivated, and continued to develop the institutional foundations of the Church in the lower Rhine region. His episcopate contributed to the gradual consolidation of Christianity in the territory that would eventually become the Diocese, then Archdiocese, of Utrecht.

Death

Saint Alberic of Utrecht died on August 21, 784, at Utrecht, having governed the see for approximately nine years after the death of his father. He died as a bishop and confessor, leaving the Church of Utrecht more firmly established than he had found it.

Saint Alberic of Utrecht met his end peacefully on August 21, 784, at Utrecht, dying as a bishop and missionary shepherd of one of the frontier sees of the Carolingian Church.
