Saint Africus
Saint Africus of Comminges (also known as Afric, African of Comminges, or Africus Bishop of Comminges; dates uncertain, probably 5th–6th century) was an early bishop of Lugdunum Convenarum (present-day Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges), in the Pyrenees foothills of southern France (present-day Haute-Garonne). He is venerated as a confessor bishop in the local tradition of the diocese of Comminges and is commemorated on May 14. The ancient see of Comminges (Civitas Convenarum) was one of the earliest episcopal sees in Roman Gaul, and Africus is listed among its early bishops in the local episcopal tradition.
Documentation for Saint Africus is extremely limited. He appears in regional martyrologies and episcopal lists of the diocese of Comminges as an early bishop whose personal holiness led to his local veneration. The Roman city of Lugdunum Convenarum, now Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, was a flourishing center in Roman Aquitania and became an early bishopric; Africus was one of the bishops who led this community in the early centuries of Christianity in southwestern Gaul.
