Saint Adelard

Saint Adelard is a variant spelling of Saint Adalard of Corbie (c. 751–827 AD), the Carolingian abbot, cousin of Charlemagne, and monastic reformer who governed the great Abbey of Corbie in northern France. The names Adalard and Adelard refer to the same historical person; both spellings appear in medieval and modern sources.

Biography

Saint Adelard of Corbie (born c. 751 AD, died January 2, 827 AD) was a Carolingian abbot and cousin of Emperor Charlemagne who governed the Abbey of Corbie — one of the most important Benedictine monasteries of the Frankish kingdom — for most of his adult life, with the exception of thirteen years spent in exile under Emperor Louis the Pious.
