Saint Adelaide
Saint Adelaide of Italy (also known as Adelaide of Burgundy, Adelheid, or Adelaide, Empress; born c. 931 AD; died December 16, 999 AD) was the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire as the wife of Emperor Otto I the Great, one of the most powerful rulers of medieval Europe, and is venerated as a saint for her exceptional piety, her generous charity, her defense of the poor, and her extraordinary personal courage in the face of persecution. She was one of the most significant women of the tenth century — a queen, empress, regent, and widow who used her royal authority for the good of the Church and the poor throughout a long and eventful life. She was canonized by Pope Urban II in 1097.
Born a princess of the kingdom of Burgundy, Adelaide was first married to King Lothair II of Italy. After his suspicious death (possibly by poison) in 950, she was imprisoned by the new Italian king Berengar II, who wished to force her to marry his son. She escaped, appealed to Otto I of Germany, and married him in 951. This marriage made her Queen of Germany, and when Otto was crowned Emperor in 962, she became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. After Otto's death in 973, she experienced years of tension with her daughter-in-law Empress Theophanu before being reconciled and eventually serving as regent for her young grandson Emperor Otto III. She spent her final years in charitable works, founding and reforming monasteries, and died at the monastery of Selz Abbey in Alsace in 999.

Biography
Birth
Saint Adelaide was born around 931 AD at Orbe in the Kingdom of Burgundy (present-day Vaud, Switzerland), the daughter of King Rudolf II of Burgundy and Queen Bertha of Swabia. She was raised at one of the great royal courts of Europe and received the education appropriate to a princess destined for a politically important marriage.
Early Life
Adelaide was betrothed in childhood and married to King Lothair II of Italy in 947, becoming Queen of Italy. This first marriage lasted until 950, when Lothair II died suddenly — possibly poisoned by the ambitious Lombard nobleman Berengar II, who then seized the Italian throne and imprisoned Adelaide, seeking to compel her to marry his son Adalbert and thereby legitimize his rule. Adelaide refused, escaped from captivity with the help of a priest, and appealed to King Otto I of East Francia (Germany) for help.
Occupation
Otto I responded with an invasion of Italy, rescued Adelaide, and married her himself in 951 — a marriage that united the German and Italian kingdoms and made Adelaide Queen of Germany. When Pope John XII crowned Otto as Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 962, Adelaide became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. She was an active co-ruler with Otto, accompanying him on campaigns and exercising significant influence at court.
After Otto's death in 973, she supported her son Emperor Otto II and then, after a long period of tension with her daughter-in-law the Byzantine princess Theophanu, was reconciled and helped govern as regent for her young grandson Emperor Otto III after Theophanu's early death in 991.
Vocation
Throughout all the political upheavals of her long life, Adelaide's Christian vocation was marked by extraordinary charity, the founding and reform of monasteries, the defense of the poor, and personal piety. She was known for visiting the sick, freeing captives, ransoming slaves, providing for the poor, and supporting the missionary work of the Church — particularly in the newly Christianized Slavic and Scandinavian kingdoms. She corresponded with Saint Adalbert of Prague and supported the Ottonian missionary enterprise in the east.
In her final years she retired increasingly to the monastic life, spending time at the monastery of Selz Abbey in Alsace (which she had founded), devoting herself to prayer, fasting, and works of charity.
Death
Saint Adelaide died on December 16, 999 AD, at the monastery of Selz in Alsace, at approximately 68 years of age. She died peacefully, surrounded by monks and having distributed her remaining wealth to the poor.

Selz Abbey (Abbaye de Seltz), founded by Saint Adelaide, was the site of her death in 999 AD. The abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, and only ruins remain, but the site preserves the memory of her foundation and is associated with her veneration in Alsace.
