Birth
Saint Abraamios of Kashkar was born in the early 6th century in Kashkar, in the region of Persia (modern Iraq), into a Christian family of the Church of the East.
Early Life
In his youth he lived a worldly life, but experienced a profound conversion and entered the monastic path. He traveled to various ascetic centers, including Egypt and the Holy Land, to learn from holy monks before returning to his homeland.
Occupation
As a monk and later abbot, Saint Abraamios founded the Great Monastery on Mount Izla near Nisibis. He composed a monastic rule that emphasized prayer, obedience, manual labor, and charity. Under his guidance the monastery flourished and became a model for many other communities, producing numerous holy monks and missionaries.
Vocation
Saint Abraamios’ vocation was to the renewal of monastic life. He restored fervor to Syriac monasticism through his personal example of humility and his wise legislation, helping the Church in Persia withstand periods of persecution and theological challenge.
Death
