Sacred Heart Major Seminary (SHMS) is a Roman Catholic major seminary in Detroit, Michigan, that prepares candidates for the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit and for dioceses nationally and internationally, while also forming deacons and lay ministers. Its campus, including a Gothic Revival building and chapel, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Campus and Formation

Sacred Heart Major Seminary is located in an urban setting in the heart of Detroit. The seminary's architecturally significant Gothic Revival building and chapel earned the campus inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Formation is organized through stages including a propaedeutic year, undergraduate (College) formation, and graduate-level Theologate formation, alongside a rigorous and extensive admittance, discernment, and formation process for priestly candidates. The seminary also offers formation for the permanent diaconate, and courses are available at satellite locations in Metro Detroit parishes as well as online.

Academics

Sacred Heart Major Seminary offers Diplomas & Certificates, Undergraduate Degrees, and Graduate & Ecclesiastical Degrees, along with academic catalogs and calendars for commuter and unclassified students. Programs include the Institute for Lay Ministry, Lay Ecclesial Ministry Certification, and a Certificate in Catholic Theology consisting of six introductory courses. The seminary is home to 24 full-time faculty in philosophy and theology, including endowed chairs such as the Adam Cardinal Maida Chair in Sacred Scripture, the Bishop Kevin M. Britt Chair of Dogmatic Theology and Christology, and the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair in Life Ethics.
