Obtain for us from Almighty God the grace to persevere in virtue, to embrace penance with a willing heart, and to love our neighbors as ourselves, most especially those who are poor and forgotten.

History and Background
St. Rose of Lima was born Isabel Flores de Oliva on April 20, 1586, in Lima, Peru, to a noble Spanish family. From her earliest years she showed signs of extraordinary holiness, and she took the name Rose following a miraculous vision. Inspired by the example of St. Catherine of Siena, she joined the Third Order of St. Dominic and dedicated herself entirely to contemplation, penance, and works of mercy.
Rose constructed a small hermitage in her family's garden where she spent long hours in prayer and mystical contemplation. She was known to undergo severe bodily mortification, including wearing a hairshirt and a metal-spiked crown reminiscent of the Crown of Thorns. These penances were never self-destructive in spirit but were understood as a profound participation in the Passion of Christ and a means of interceding for the conversion of sinners.
She died on August 24, 1617, at the age of thirty-one. Her funeral in Lima was attended by virtually the entire city, a testament to the deep popular veneration she had already inspired during her lifetime. She was beatified by Pope Clement IX in 1668 and canonized by Pope Clement X on April 12, 1671. She is the patron saint of Latin America, the Philippines, India, and all those who live under the Cross of bodily suffering.
The intercessory prayer composed in her honor draws upon the central themes of her spirituality: joyful acceptance of the Cross, penance freely embraced, charity toward the poor, and the ardent desire for Heaven. It has been a staple of Dominican Third Order devotions and is widely prayed throughout Peru and other nations where her cult flourishes.

This prayer may be prayed at any time but is particularly recommended on or around the feast of St. Rose of Lima, which is celebrated on August 23 in the universal Roman Calendar (formerly August 30 in the pre-1969 calendar).
Personal Devotion: The prayer is fitting for individuals who are enduring physical illness, spiritual dryness, persecution, or any heavy burden. St. Rose's intercession is especially sought by those who suffer silently and who wish to unite their pain to the Passion of Christ.
Novena: This prayer may be incorporated into a nine-day novena ending on August 23. Each day, the faithful may reflect on one aspect of St. Rose's life—her penance, her charity, her mystical prayer, her fortitude—before offering the prayer.
Liturgy of the Hours: Those who pray the Divine Office may use this prayer as a concluding prayer after the Office of Readings or Evening Prayer on her feast day.
Group Recitation: In many parishes of Latin America and the Philippines, this prayer is recited communally at Masses honoring St. Rose, particularly during Masses for the sick and suffering.
Before Works of Charity: Because St. Rose cared deeply for the poor, the sick, and the enslaved people of Lima, this prayer is also appropriate before volunteering at hospitals, soup kitchens, or other works of corporal mercy.
