History and Background
Gianna Beretta Molla was born on October 4, 1922, in Magenta, Italy — fittingly, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, whose spirit of joyful sacrifice would mirror her own life. She was raised in a profoundly Catholic family and, from her youth, was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Action. She went on to earn degrees in medicine and surgery, becoming a beloved family physician in Mesero, Italy, with a special love for mothers, infants, and the poor.
In 1955, Gianna married Pietro Molla, a Catholic engineer, and together they built a home of faith, joy, and generous love. They were blessed with three children. In 1961, while pregnant with their fourth child, Gianna was diagnosed with a fibroma of the uterus. Faced with a choice between procedures that would have endangered or ended the life of her unborn child, she asked her surgeons to remove only the fibroma, accepting the considerable risk to her own health. She told Pietro, "If you must choose between me and the baby, choose the baby."
Their daughter, Gianna Emanuela, was born healthy on April 21, 1962. One week later, on April 28, 1962, St. Gianna died of septic peritonitis, offering her life for her child. Her feast day is celebrated on April 28.
Pope John Paul II, who beatified her in 1994 and canonized her ten years later, held her up as a model for modern Catholic women — demonstrating that heroic sanctity is possible in the midst of ordinary family life, professional work, and the demands of contemporary society.
