Gemma Galgani was born on March 12, 1878, in Camigliano, in the Province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. Orphaned young and afflicted with a debilitating spinal illness that doctors considered incurable, she attributed her recovery to the intercession of the Passionist priest St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows.
