Litany for Those Experiencing Difficulty Conceiving
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
hear us.
From all impatience and the urge to demand children on our own timetable,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From envying couples who conceive easily and quickly,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From the despair that whispers we will never hold our own child,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From the temptation to doubt Your goodness and love for us,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From bitterness toward our own bodies or toward each other,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From the fear that our marriage is somehow incomplete without children,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
That we may wait upon You with trust and peaceful hearts,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may cherish and nurture the love we already share as husband and wife,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may accept Your timing and Your holy will with serenity and joy,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That our longing for a child may draw us closer to You and to one another,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may remain open to the gift of life in whatever way You choose to send it,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may offer every month of waiting, every test, and every disappointment as a sacrifice of praise,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That in our emptiness we may become a source of hope and gentle encouragement to others who also wait,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
O Mary, Mother of Hope and Help of Christians, pray for all couples longing for children.
St. Joseph, foster father and protector of families, pray for us.
St. Anne and St. Joachim, pray for us.
St. Rita of Cascia, patron of impossible causes, pray for us.
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, You who heard the prayers of Hannah and Elizabeth in their barrenness, look with mercy upon us. In the ache of difficulty conceiving, purify our desires, strengthen our faith, and teach us that every soul is entrusted to us according to Your perfect plan. Make our marriage a fruitful sanctuary of love, whether through biological children or through the spiritual motherhood and fatherhood to which You may call us.
Through the intercession of the Holy Family, grant us the grace to desire only what You desire, trusting that You will never leave us barren of grace. Amen.
