Litany for Openness to Alternative Paths to Parenthood
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
hear us.
From clinging tightly to our own vision of family and rejecting Your surprises,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From fear of the unknown in adoption, foster care, or a childfree vocation,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From envy or resentment when others receive the biological children we hoped for,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From the temptation to see non-biological paths as “second best,”
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From discouragement that makes us close our hearts to new forms of fruitfulness,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
From pride that resists the humility of different vocations of love,
Deliver us, O Jesus.
That we may surrender our dreams of family entirely into Your hands,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may joyfully consider adoption or foster care as a beautiful calling to love,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may embrace a childfree vocation with peace, purpose, and generous love,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That our marriage may be fruitful in spiritual motherhood and fatherhood,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may welcome every child You place in our lives — born of our hearts, not only our bodies,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That we may offer our surrendered hopes as a living sacrifice of trust and praise,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
That in openness to Your will we may become radiant witnesses of hope to other couples discerning their path,
Jesus, grant us the grace to desire it.
O Mary, Mother of the Word Incarnate and Queen of Families, pray for all who seek to welcome life in new ways.
St. Joseph, foster father and protector of the Holy Family, pray for us.
St. Anne and St. Joachim, pray for us.
St. Thomas More, patron of adopted children and large families, pray for us.
St. Gianna Molla, pray for us.
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, You who were entrusted to the care of Mary and Joseph, open our hearts to every path of parenthood You may choose for us — whether through adoption, foster care, spiritual fruitfulness, or a childfree vocation lived for Your glory. Free us from all fear and attachment, and fill us with generous love so that our home and hearts may always be a dwelling place for You and for those You send us.
Through the intercession of the Holy Family, grant us the grace to desire only what You desire, trusting that every form of faithful love bears eternal fruit. Amen.
