The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome and the ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome—the Pope. Founded in 324 under Emperor Constantine, it is the oldest public church in Rome and the oldest basilica of the Western Church. Its traditional title, Omnium Ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis Mater et Caput (“Mother and Head of All Churches of the City and the World”), marks it as the mother church of Catholicism worldwide.
