The Basilica of Our Lady of Luján is Argentina’s national Marian shrine, about 70 km west of Buenos Aires in the Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján. Devotion to Our Lady of Luján traces to a 1630 terracotta image of the Immaculate Conception; the present neo-Gothic basilica, begun in the late nineteenth century, was elevated by Pope Pius XI in 1930. It draws millions of pilgrims each year, especially around the principal feast on 8 May.
