The Basilica of St. Mary in Alexandria, Virginia, is the oldest Catholic parish in Virginia, established in 1795 by Fr. Francis Ignatius Neale, S.J., then president of Georgetown University. Early fundraising famously included a contribution from George Washington, a gesture often cited as a symbol of religious tolerance in the early United States. Today it is a territorial parish of the Diocese of Arlington and a landmark of Catholic life in northern Virginia.
