Panama City (Ciudad de Panamá) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Panama, located on the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal in the southern part of the country.

History
Panama City’s Catholic heritage dates from the early Spanish colonial period and has been shaped by its strategic location on the isthmus.
Early settlement
The original city (Panamá Viejo) was founded on August 15, 1519, by Pedro Arias Dávila, making it the oldest European-founded settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It was destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671 and relocated to its present site (Casco Antiguo) in 1673.[1]
Catholic evangelization
Catholicism was established from the founding. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Catedral Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), located in the historic Casco Antiguo, was begun in 1688 and completed in 1796 in a mix of Baroque and neoclassical styles. It was elevated to minor basilica status and serves as the archdiocesan cathedral. The famous Golden Altar (Altar de Oro) in the Church of San José is a notable colonial treasure.
The Archdiocese of Panama was erected in 1520 (one of the first in the New World) and elevated to metropolitan status in 1955. The city also features several historic shrines, including the Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
