Muxima is a town and commune in the municipality of Quiçama, in the province of Bengo, western Angola, located on the left bank of the Kwanza River (Cuanza River) approximately 130 kilometers south of Luanda. As of the 2014 census, the commune had a population of 8,166 inhabitants. It is Angola's most important Marian pilgrimage site, centered on the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Conception of Muxima, a 16th-century church that has drawn massive devotion for centuries and is considered the largest center of Marian pilgrimage in sub-Saharan Africa.
History
Muxima's significance is deeply tied to its role in Portuguese colonial history and the emergence of Marian devotion in Angola.
Early settlement
The village of Muxima was occupied by the Portuguese in 1589, who built a fortress and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Muxima in 1599. The site became an important center in the Portuguese slave trade along the Kwanza River, with the church serving as a place where slaves were baptized before deportation.[1]

The church, in Portuguese colonial style, dates to 1599 and was dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception.
