Managua is the capital and largest city of Nicaragua, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Managua (Lake Xolotlán) in the western part of the country. As of 2025 estimates, the urban/metropolitan population is approximately 1,121,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Managua and serves as the principal center of Catholic life in Nicaragua, with the modern Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception as its mother church.
History
Managua's history includes ancient indigenous roots, colonial development, and repeated natural disasters that have shaped its Catholic infrastructure.
Early settlement
The area around Lake Managua was inhabited by indigenous peoples for centuries before Spanish arrival. The modern city developed in the 19th century and became the capital in 1852 after rivalry between León and Granada.[1]
