The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST) is a Catholic graduate school of theology located in Berkeley, California, serving lay men and women, Jesuits, clergy, and members of other religious orders who come from across the nation and around the world to prepare for a broad range of ministries. Affiliated with the Graduate Theological Union, JST is rooted in the Ignatian and Catholic intellectual tradition and engages in ecumenical, interfaith, and intercultural dialogue.
History
The Jesuit School was established in 1934 as Alma College, located in Los Gatos, California, and was founded to serve the needs of the California and Oregon Jesuit provinces.
Campus and Formation
JST is located at 1735 Le Roy Avenue in Berkeley, California. Students engage in fellowship and formation through community Masses and lay-led liturgies, weekly dinners, retreats, and community service projects and reflection sessions. The school community gathers for Mass and a simple supper on Tuesday evenings, an event open to alumni and friends of the school as well as prospective students.
Academics
JST offers the Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) degree, including an online concentration in Synodal Leadership designed to equip students with the theological, pastoral, and spiritual knowledge needed to participate in and lead synodal processes in the Church. The concentration is funded by the Hilton Foundation, which is providing full-tuition scholarships for Catholic religious sisters admitted to the program in fall 2026.
