Nearby pages
- Extension:NearbyPages
- Automatic detection: Uses browser location to show nearby geotagged pages (with user permission).
- Manual mode: Specify coordinates via URL, e.g.: https://yourwiki.org/wiki/Special:Nearby#/coord/40.7128,-74.0060 (for New York City area).
- Configurable search radius: Default is 10 km, adjustable via settings (limited by API constraints).
- Modern implementation: Rewritten in Vue.js (decoupled from the old MobileFrontend version).
- Dependency:
- Requires the GeoData extension (Extension:GeoData) to add geotags/coordinates to pages on your local wiki. Without it, there won't be any local data to display — the extension relies on pages having geographic coordinates.
- It adds support for storing and querying geographical coordinates on wiki pages. This turns your "tagged" articles into geotagged ones, so they can be discovered via location-based tools.
- Primary purpose: Let editors add latitude/longitude to pages (e.g., for cities, landmarks, events, mountains).
- Exposes data via the MediaWiki API (prop=coordinates and list=geosearch) — this powers things like NearbyPages, maps, and spatial searches.
- Searchable: Pages with coordinates become findable in radius-based or bounding-box queries (e.g., "show pages within 10 km of here").
- Key Features
- Supports multiple globes (Earth, Moon, Mars, various moons/planets).
- Handles primary (main location) and secondary coordinates per page.
- Includes metadata like type (city, mountain, river, etc.), dimension (size/scale), name, region.
- Two backends:
- Default: MySQL (tile-based indexing for fast updates).
- Advanced: ElasticSearch (via CirrusSearch extension) for powerful geospatial queries.
- MediaWiki compatibility: Works with recent versions (confirmed up to 1.39–1.40+; likely still compatible in 2026 as it's a Wikimedia-maintained extension).
If your wiki already stores latitude/longitude in Cargo tables (e.g., via a template field of type "Coordinates" — Cargo supports a special handling for coord fields with NEAR queries), you have a few indirect options to achieve similar "nearby" functionality without native NearbyPages support
