Establishment
The Diocese of Xingu-Altamira was erected on 6 November 2019 by Pope Francis through the apostolic constitution "Cum in Amazonia", carved from the former Territorial Prelature of Xingu to better serve the growing pastoral needs of the region.
History
Early Years
The territory that now forms the diocese was originally part of the vast Apostolic Prefecture of Xingu established in the early twentieth century. It later became a territorial prelature in 1963 under the care of the Franciscans.
Elevation to Diocese
In 2019 the prelature was suppressed and its territory reorganized to create the new Diocese of Xingu-Altamira, reflecting the Church’s response to demographic and missionary developments in the Brazilian Amazon.
Geography
The diocese covers a large portion of western Pará state, including the municipalities of Altamira, Senador José Porfírio, Porto de Moz, and several others along the Xingu River basin. It forms part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Belém do Pará.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Altamira serves as the mother church of the diocese.
