Establishment
The Diocese of Viedma was erected on 22 July 1957 by Pope Pius XII to serve the growing Catholic population in the southern regions of Argentina.

The diocese was created from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Bahía Blanca. It has developed pastoral presence in the Patagonian frontier, focusing on rural and indigenous communities.
