Establishment
The Diocese of Tocantinópolis was established on 18 December 1959 by Pope John XXIII to serve the growing Catholic population in northern Brazil, with territory drawn from the then Diocese of Porto Nacional.
History
The diocese developed through missionary efforts in the mid-twentieth century as the Brazilian interior opened to settlement. Its boundaries have remained stable since erection, supporting evangelization among rural communities in Tocantins.
