Establishment
The Diocese of Taubaté was established on 7 June 1908 by Pope Pius X through the apostolic constitution “Apostolatus Officium,” carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of São Paulo to meet the pastoral needs of the growing population in the Paraíba Valley region.
History
Early Years
Following its erection, the diocese quickly organized parishes and schools under its first bishops, responding to the spiritual demands of coffee-growing communities and emerging industrial centers.
Modern Era
In the twentieth century the diocese experienced steady growth, with the transfer of its metropolitan affiliation to the newly created Archdiocese of Aparecida in 1958 strengthening its ties to the national shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida.

The diocese covers the civil municipalities of Taubaté, Pindamonhangaba, Tremembé, Redenção da Serra, Natividade da Serra, São Luiz do Paraitinga, Lagoinha, and Jambeiro in the state of São Paulo.
Mother Church
The Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi in Taubaté, a neoclassical structure completed in the nineteenth century and elevated to cathedral status in 1908, serves as the mother church of the diocese.
