The Diocese of Santo André, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, is an active diocese located in the industrial ABC region of the state of São Paulo in Brazil. Erected on 18 February 1954 by Pope Pius XII, it ministers to a large Catholic population in one of the country’s most economically significant areas. As part of the Ecclesiastical Province of São Paulo, the diocese supports numerous parishes and social initiatives focused on workers and families. Establishment

The Diocese of Santo André was established on 18 February 1954 by Pope Pius XII to serve the rapidly growing Catholic population in the industrial suburbs southeast of São Paulo. Its territory was taken from the Archdiocese of São Paulo.

History

Early Years

The diocese was created amid Brazil’s post-war industrialization, when the ABC region attracted large numbers of migrants seeking factory work. The first bishop, Jorge Marcos de Oliveira, was appointed in 1954 and oversaw the construction of the initial network of parishes.

Later Development

Subsequent bishops expanded educational and social services to meet the needs of the working-class population. The diocese has remained focused on pastoral care in an area marked by both economic growth and social challenges.

Geography

The diocese covers the municipalities of Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano do Sul, Diadema, Mauá, Ribeirão Pires and Rio Grande da Serra in the state of São Paulo.

Mother Church

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Good Voyage in Santo André serves as the mother church. The present building was dedicated in 1964 and features a modern architectural style with a prominent bell tower.
