Establishment
The Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco traces its origins to the Apostolic Vicariate of San Ignacio de Velasco, erected on 27 January 1930 to serve the Chiquitos missions in eastern Bolivia. It was elevated to the rank of a diocese on 14 November 1958.
History
The territory had been evangelized by Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, who established a series of reductions among the Chiquitos peoples. After the suppression of the Jesuits, the area experienced periods of neglect until the twentieth-century restoration of organized pastoral care. The see has remained a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Santa Cruz de la Sierra since its erection.
Geography
The diocese covers a large portion of the eastern plains and low hills of the Santa Cruz Department in Bolivia, including the municipalities of San Ignacio de Velasco, San Miguel de Velasco, and surrounding rural areas.

The Cathedral of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in San Ignacio de Velasco serves as the mother church. The present structure incorporates elements of the historic Jesuit mission church built in the eighteenth century.
