Establishment

The Diocese of Saint Thomas was canonically erected on October 16, 1960, by Pope John XXIII through the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus, separating the U.S. Virgin Islands from the Archdiocese of San Juan in Puerto Rico to better serve the local Catholic population amid growing American influence following the 1917 Danish-American transfer of the islands.[3][4]
