The Diocese of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese serving the French overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic. Erected in 1766 by Pope Clement XIII, it encompassed the entire territory of the islands and formed part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Bordeaux. The diocese was suppressed on 23 July 2018, with its territory incorporated into the Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes; its see is now a titular see.

Establishment

The Diocese of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon was erected on 27 September 1766 by Pope Clement XIII to provide pastoral care for the Catholic population of the French islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

History

The diocese developed slowly due to the small and fluctuating population of the islands. It experienced periods of vacancy, particularly during the French Revolution and World War II. The see remained under the metropolitan authority of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux throughout its existence. On 23 July 2018 the diocese was suppressed by the Holy See and its territory was united to the Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes.

The diocese covered the entire territory of the French overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, consisting of the islands of Saint-Pierre, Miquelon-Langlade, and several smaller islets.
