Establishment
The Diocese of Rio do Sul was erected on 12 May 1957 by Pope Pius XII from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Florianópolis, to serve the growing Catholic communities in the Itajaí Valley region of Santa Catarina.
History
The diocese developed rapidly after its founding, with the construction of its cathedral and expansion of parishes to meet the needs of rural and urban populations in southern Brazil. It has remained a suffragan see within the Ecclesiastical Province of Florianópolis since its establishment.
