Establishment
The Diocese of Río Gallegos was established on 10 November 1961 by Pope John XXIII through the bull “Novarum Ecclesiarum” to meet the pastoral needs of the southernmost regions of Argentina. Its territory was taken from the Diocese of Comodoro Rivadavia and the Archdiocese of Bahía Blanca.
History
Early Years
The first bishop, Cornelio Chacón, was appointed in 1961 and focused on organizing parishes across the immense territory of Santa Cruz Province. Missionaries traveled long distances to serve isolated sheep-farming communities and oil workers.
Later Developments
Subsequent bishops expanded educational and social services. The diocese has maintained a strong missionary emphasis due to the region’s harsh climate and low population density.
