Establishment
The Diocese of Porto Nacional was erected on 20 December 1915 by Pope Benedict XV to serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of what was then the state of Goiás, now Tocantins. It was carved from territory previously under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of São José de Goyaz.
History
Early Years
The diocese began with limited infrastructure in a frontier region, relying on missionary priests to establish parishes among settlers and indigenous populations.
Modern Era
In 1956 the see was transferred to the newly created Ecclesiastical Province of Palmas following the elevation of that archdiocese. The diocese has since expanded its pastoral presence amid the development of Tocantins.
Geography
The diocese covers the central and northern portions of Tocantins, including the municipalities of Porto Nacional, Palmas (partial), Paraíso do Tocantins, and numerous smaller towns along the Tocantins River.
Mother Church
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Porto Nacional serves as the mother church. The present structure dates from the mid-twentieth century and features a simple neoclassical design typical of regional Brazilian cathedrals.
