Establishment
The Diocese of Petrolina was erected on 5 December 1918 by Pope Benedict XV through the apostolic constitution "Quo spirituali", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife to serve the growing Catholic communities along the São Francisco River.
History
The diocese developed rapidly in the early twentieth century amid missionary efforts to reach isolated sertão communities. Boundary adjustments occurred in 1957 and 1974 to accommodate population growth. The construction of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1925 marked a major milestone in establishing a permanent ecclesiastical presence.

The diocese covers the western portion of Pernambuco state, including the municipalities of Petrolina, Lagoa Grande, Santa Maria da Boa Vista, Orocó, and several others along the São Francisco River valley. It belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of Olinda and Recife.
Mother Church
