Establishment

The Diocese of Peterborough was canonically erected on March 14, 1882, by Pope Leo XIII through the apostolic constitution Singulari as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Toronto, carved from the eastern portion of the Diocese of Toronto.[3][4] This creation addressed the spiritual needs of the growing Catholic population in central Ontario, primarily Irish immigrants and converts, amid expanding railroads and settlements.

History

Early Development

Under its first bishop, James Vincent Cleary, the diocese focused on building infrastructure, including the cathedral and schools. Boundary adjustments occurred in 1938 when parts were transferred to the new Diocese of Kingston in Ontario.[5]

Modern Era

The diocese navigated post-Vatican II changes, emphasizing renewal and ecumenism. In recent decades, it has addressed declining rural populations while growing in urban areas like Peterborough.[6]

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Peterborough, constructed between 1892 and 1907 in Romanesque Revival style, serves as the diocese's mother church and seat of the bishop. It features notable stained glass windows and underwent restoration in the 2010s.[8]
