Diocese of Oregon City

Establishment

The Diocese of Oregon City was erected on 1 December 1846 by Pope Gregory XVI from territory previously part of the Vicariate Apostolic of Oregon, to provide structured pastoral care for Catholic settlers and Native American missions in the Oregon Country.

In 1850 the see was raised to the status of an archdiocese. It retained the name Archdiocese of Oregon City until 1928, when the name was changed to the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon to reflect the relocation of the see city.
