Establishment
The Diocese of Nova Friburgo was erected on 26 November 1947 by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution "Quo in Brasiliae", carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Niterói and the Diocese of Petrópolis to better serve the growing Catholic communities in the mountainous interior of Rio de Janeiro state.
History
Early Years
Following its establishment, the diocese focused on organizing parishes and building infrastructure in the region known for its Swiss-Brazilian colonial heritage. The first bishop, Júlio de Oliveira, oversaw initial expansion amid post-World War II population growth.
Modern Era
