Diocese of Nesqually

The Diocese of Nesqually, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese in the United States encompassing parts of the Washington Territory. Established in 1850 by Pope Pius IX, it served the growing Catholic population in the Pacific Northwest under missionary bishops. The see was renamed the Diocese of Seattle in 1907 and later elevated to an archdiocese. Its territory and legacy continue in the present-day Archdiocese of Seattle within the Ecclesiastical Province of Seattle.

Establishment

The Diocese of Nesqually was erected on 31 May 1850 by Pope Pius IX to serve the Catholic faithful in the Washington Territory, carved from the Vicariate Apostolic of Oregon.

Renaming
