Establishment
The Diocese of Melipilla was established on 7 January 1991 by Pope John Paul II through the apostolic constitution "Quandoquidem" to serve the growing Catholic communities in the rural areas southwest of Santiago, carved from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile.
