Diocese of Leavenworth

The Diocese of Leavenworth, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese in the United States. Established in 1877 by Pope Pius IX, it encompassed much of the state of Kansas and served a growing Catholic population in the American frontier. The see was renamed in 1947 and its territory became the present Diocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Its legacy includes early missionary work and the construction of significant churches in the region.

Establishment

The Diocese of Leavenworth was erected on 22 May 1877 by Pope Pius IX to serve the expanding Catholic population across Kansas, carved from the former Vicariate Apostolic of Kansas.

History

Early Years

The diocese was established amid rapid settlement of the American West. Early bishops focused on building parishes, schools, and missions to support immigrant Catholic communities.

Renaming

In 1947 the see was renamed the Diocese of Kansas City in Kansas, reflecting the relocation of the episcopal seat to Kansas City. The original territory remained largely intact under the new name.

Geography

The diocese covered the northeastern portion of Kansas, including the following historical counties and areas:

• Wyandotte County
• Atchison County
• Doniphan County
• and surrounding frontier regions

Mother Church

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Leavenworth served as the mother church. The Gothic Revival structure, completed in the late nineteenth century, remains a historic landmark.
