Establishment

The Diocese of Lake Charles was canonically erected on July 5, 1980, by Pope John Paul II through the apostolic constitution Litteris et decretis, carved from the eastern portion of the Diocese of Lafayette.[4] It was established to better serve the growing Catholic communities in southwestern Louisiana, with Jude Thaddeus Speyrer appointed as its first bishop.[5]

History

The diocese's territory was originally part of the sprawling Diocese of Lafayette, which covered much of southern Louisiana. Following rapid population growth after World War II and the oil boom in the region, the Vatican approved its creation in 1980 to provide more localized pastoral care.[6]

Key milestones include the dedication of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in 1956 (prior to diocesan erection) and the diocese's response to natural disasters, such as Hurricanes Rita (2005), Ike (2008), Laura (2020), and Laura's aftermath with Hurricane Delta.[7] Boundary adjustments have been minimal since establishment.

Geography

The Diocese of Lake Charles comprises six civil parishes in southwestern Louisiana: Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Vernon. This rural and semi-urban area spans approximately 4,272 square miles (11,065 km²), featuring coastal marshlands, piney woods, and oil-rich prairies, and falls within the Ecclesiastical Province of New Orleans.[8][9]

Mother church

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles serves as the mother church. Built in 1956 in a modern Gothic Revival style, it miraculously sustained minimal damage during Hurricane Laura's 150 mph winds in 2020, becoming a symbol of diocesan endurance.[10]

Current Bishop

Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville, formerly Bishop of Houma-Thibodaux and Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, was appointed to Lake Charles on November 14, 2023, and installed on January 24, 2024. A native of Colombia, he brings experience in migration and pastoral care.[11]

The diocese rates as somewhat conservative (4.0), with Traditional Latin Mass offered weekly in several parishes, a strong emphasis on pro-life initiatives and traditional moral teachings alongside community outreach, and leadership prioritizing doctrinal fidelity and Eucharistic devotion.[13][14]
