Establishment

The Diocese of Kalamazoo was canonically erected on January 13, 1970, by Pope Paul VI through the apostolic constitution Quæmadmodum in Ecclesia, carved from the eastern portion of the Diocese of Grand Rapids to address the growing Catholic community in southwestern Michigan.[3][4] This creation reflected the post-World War II population boom and the need for localized pastoral care in an area transitioning from rural to suburban demographics.
