Establishment

The Diocese of Juticalpa was erected on 2 July 1987 by Pope John Paul II to serve the growing Catholic population in the Olancho region of Honduras, taking territory from the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa.

History

The territory that now comprises the diocese was originally part of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. Its creation responded to pastoral needs in the eastern departments of Honduras during the late twentieth century. The diocese has focused on evangelization in rural areas since its founding.

Geography

The diocese covers the entire Department of Olancho in eastern Honduras. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Tegucigalpa.
