Establishment
The Diocese of Joaçaba was erected on 12 May 1966 by Pope Paul VI through the apostolic constitution "Cum Urbs Joaçaba" to serve the growing Catholic communities in western Santa Catarina, previously part of the Diocese of Lages.
History
The territory that forms the Diocese of Joaçaba was originally evangelized by missionaries from the Archdiocese of Curitiba and later the Diocese of Lages in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The see was created to address pastoral needs arising from agricultural expansion and population growth in the region. Since its establishment, the diocese has focused on the formation of local clergy and the development of parishes in both rural and urban settings.
Geography
The diocese covers municipalities in the western part of Santa Catarina, including Joaçaba, Herval d'Oeste, Água Doce, Catanduvas, and surrounding areas. It lies within the Ecclesiastical Province of Florianópolis.
