Establishment

The Diocese of Jataí was established on 21 June 1957 by Pope Pius XII from territory previously belonging to the Archdiocese of Goiânia and the Diocese of São José do Rio Preto, to serve the growing Catholic communities in western Goiás.

History

The diocese was created amid post-war population growth and agricultural development in the interior of Brazil. Its first bishop, Abel Ribeiro Camelo, oversaw the construction of the initial cathedral and the organization of parishes.
