Establishment
The Diocese of Guajará-Mirim was erected on 3 January 1983 by Pope John Paul II from territory previously belonging to the Diocese of Porto Velho.
History
The diocese was created to address the pastoral needs of the western portion of what is now the state of Rondônia, an area marked by rapid settlement and missionary activity in the late twentieth century. Its territory has remained stable since erection.
Geography
The diocese covers the western part of the state of Rondônia, including municipalities along the border with Bolivia.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Guajará-Mirim serves as the mother church of the diocese.
