The Diocese of Grass Valley, a suffragan diocese of the Latin Rite, was a historic diocese in northern California in the United States. Established in 1868 by Pope Pius IX, it served the Catholic population amid the Gold Rush settlements and mining communities. The diocese was suppressed in 1886, with its territory transferred to the newly created Diocese of Sacramento. It continues today as a titular see of the Catholic Church. Establishment

The Diocese of Grass Valley was erected on 27 September 1868 by Pope Pius IX to serve the expanding Catholic communities in the northern mining districts of California, carved from the Vicariate Apostolic of Marysville.

History

Early Years

The diocese was created during a period of rapid settlement following the California Gold Rush, with its first bishop focusing on establishing parishes and missions across a vast and rugged territory.

Suppression

On 28 May 1886 the see was suppressed by papal decree and its territory assigned to the newly erected Diocese of Sacramento.

Geography

The diocese encompassed the northern counties of California, including areas around Grass Valley, Nevada City, and surrounding mining regions in what is now part of the modern Ecclesiastical Province of San Francisco.
