The Diocese of Grand Falls was canonically erected on 5 February 1974 through the apostolic constitution Grand Falls issued by Pope Paul VI, carved from the territory of the Archdiocese of St. John's (Newfoundland). The diocese's territory has roots in early missionary efforts by French and Irish clergy in the 17th and 18th centuries. Formal Catholic organization began with the Vicariate Apostolic of Newfoundland in 1796, evolving into the Diocese of St. John's in 1847 and archdiocese in 1904.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Grand Falls-Windsor, constructed in 1962 in modern basilica style, serves as the diocese's mother church and seat of the bishop. It features a prominent spire and hosts major liturgies, including ordinations.[9]
