Establishment
The Diocese of Garanhuns was erected on 2 August 1918 by Pope Benedict XV through the apostolic constitution "Archidioecesis Olindensis et Recifensis" to serve the growing Catholic communities in the interior of Pernambuco, separating territory from the Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife.
History
The diocese was created amid the expansion of the Catholic Church in northeastern Brazil during the early twentieth century. Its territory has remained largely stable since foundation, with pastoral focus on rural evangelization and devotion to local saints and Marian titles.

The diocese covers municipalities in the southern portion of Pernambuco, including Garanhuns, Bom Conselho, Caetés, Canhotinho, Capoeiras, Correntes, Jupi, Jurema, Lagoa do Ouro, Lajedo, Palmeirina, Paranatama, Saloá, São João, and Terezinha.
