Diocese of Escuintla

Establishment
The Diocese of Escuintla was established on 9 May 1969 as the Territorial Prelature of Escuintla by Pope Paul VI to serve the growing Catholic population in the southern coastal region of Guatemala. It was elevated to the status of a full diocese on 28 July 1994.
History
The territory that became the Diocese of Escuintla was originally part of the Archdiocese of Guatemala City. The prelature was created to address pastoral needs in the agriculturally rich but sparsely served Escuintla region. Following its elevation to diocesan rank, the see has focused on expanding parishes and educational institutions amid the challenges of rural ministry and natural disasters common to the area.
Geography
The diocese covers the entire Escuintla Department in southern Guatemala, including coastal plains and volcanic highlands. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Guatemala City.
