Establishment

The Diocese of Edmundston was canonically erected on 3 May 1944 by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution Ex supremis apostolatus, carved from the territories of the Diocese of Bathurst and the Diocese of Saint John to better serve the Acadian and French-speaking Catholic communities in northwestern New Brunswick.[3][4] This creation addressed the pastoral needs of a growing Catholic population in a remote, forested region with strong cultural ties to Acadia.

The diocese's history is intertwined with Acadian resilience following the Great Expulsion of 1755. Early missionary work was conducted by French priests, with permanent parishes forming in the 19th century under the vicars apostolic of New Brunswick.

Under its first bishop, Camille André LeBlanc, the diocese constructed numerous churches and schools amid post-World War II growth. Boundary adjustments occurred minimally, maintaining focus on rural evangelization.
