Establishment

The Diocese of Dodge City was canonically erected on July 16, 1951, by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution In Catholici sacerdotii, carved from the eastern portion of the Diocese of Wichita to address the pastoral needs of Catholics in southwestern Kansas.[3][4] The new diocese reflected the post-World War II growth in rural Catholic populations supported by farming and ranching communities. Father John B. Franz, previously a priest in Wichita, was appointed as its first bishop and installed on October 5, 1951.
